WASHINGTON (Nov. 14, 2012) -- Soldiers are enlisting the sun's power in Afghanistan.

Ten solar generators are now providing Special Forces Soldiers in distant outposts the energy they need to accomplish their mission. And, these generators are allowing them precious more time to train Afghan forces and win the friendship of local Afghans.

The key benefit of solar is savings in fuel. Fuel makes up a significant portion of weight and volume that has to be transported great distances to remote locations in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

"During World War II, we used (an average of) one gallon of fuel per day, per Soldier," said Richard G. Kidd IV, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for Energy & Sustainability, with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy & Environment. "We now use (an average of) 20 gallons per day, per Soldier, and in Afghanistan, over 40 percent of that fuel is used to produce electricity.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 13) – An Afghan and coalition security force killed Taliban leader Mir Jan Lala during a security operation in Helmand province Monday.

Mir Jan Lala was responsible for providing intelligence to Taliban senior leadership for planning attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 13) – An International Security Assistance Force service member died as a result of an explosion on an ISAF camp in southern Afghanistan today.

The cause of the explosion in unknown, however, there is no current indication that the explosion was a result of enemy activity. ISAF officials are investigating the incident.

It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.

ISAF Joint Command morning operational update

KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 12) – An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, arrested a Taliban leader in Kandahar province today.

The arrested leader commanded an improvised explosive device attack cell in central Kandahar province that provided subordinate insurgent fighters with IED materials, weapons and ammunition.

During the operation, the security force also detained a number of suspected insurgents.
